Award Winning Corporate Response Case Study - West Midlands

OEE’s response to a commercial gasoil spill provided a rapid and cost-effective solution for the client, winning OEE the ‘Corporate Responder of the Year’ Award at the UK Spill awards 2019.

Up to 5000 litres of gasoil was lost to ground on a large industrial site in mid-September 2018. OEE were contacted the following day and were able to mobilise within 30 minutes of instruction and attended site the same afternoon to contain the spill. By the following day OEE had installed a pneumatic air-operated oil- water recovery system within the contaminated site drainage and deployed oil absorbent booms to mitigate the risk to a downstream balancing pond on site.

Further remediation works were completed throughout September 2018 and included the excavation of gasoil contaminated materials at the source, excavation of interception trenches and installation of recovery sumps and a second pneumatic air-operated oil-water recovery system.

Over a period of 5 months, OEE treated a total of 219,000 litres of gasoil contaminated groundwater and recovered an estimated total of 3,145 litres of gasoil. The net effect was no migration of gasoil off-site and no disruption to the commercial operations at the site.

OEE provided further recommendations to the client on the effective management of oil storage on site, as well as providing ongoing monitoring of residual contamination.
